The new hard-cover, full-color book about McPherson County’s art heritage tells the story of the friendship between Lindsborg artist Birger Sandzen and McPherson seed merchant-turned-art dealer Carl Smalley and the annual art exhibitions they helped organize. School children sold tickets to exhibitions from 1911 to 1937 and purchased an impressive art collection with the proceeds. The world’s top artists — including Rembrandt, Whistler, Manet, George Bellows, Childe Hassam and Robert Henri –were among the hundreds of artists whose works were exhibited. Written by Cynthia Mines, the book is 132 pages with 125 illustrations. All proceeds go to support the art collection and other local nonprofits.
